Our Economy
Folks that mine, sell and burn coal point out
that 50% of our nation’s energy comes from coal. They
claim that coal is cheap and we need to use more of it to maintain
our country’s economy.
Despite all the money spent promoting coal, this
old-fashioned fuel is past its prime. Where just a few years
ago utilities were lining up to build new coal plants, today
most energy providers are removing coal from their long-term
plans.
That’s because they have realized the true
cost of coal, and found that its anything but cheap. They’ve
seen the cost to build and operate coal plants skyrocket and
are looking elsewhere to affordably meet their customers’ needs.
Many are finding ways to save energy and create
power from clean, renewable resources. Across America, this movement
is unleashing a wave of ingenuity that will revolutionize our
economy, creating millions of home-grown, high-paying jobs. In
South Carolina, clean energy is projected to create tens of thousands
of badly needed manufacturing jobs all across the state.
