Despite all that is dirty about
it, there have been a lot of promises made about “clean
coal.” Like the tobacco industry before it, many in the
coal business aren’t telling the truth about the dangers
of their product.
Calling coal “clean” is their way
of getting us to go on using their product without thinking
about what it might be doing to us and our environment. Unfortunately, “clean
coal” is like a “healthy cigarette” – there’s
simply no such thing.
The truth about coal is that it is the dirtiest
way to make the energy we need.
Santee Cooper wants to build a new coal plant on
the banks of the Great Pee Dee River in South Carolina. Before
saying “yes” to a new coal plant in South Carolina – where
more than 70% of our power already comes from coal – take
some time to learn about how coal might affect your health,
your
environment and
the economy of
our state.
